Birding Gauteng 2 Site Map
The Wider Gauteng area in South Africa boasts over 550 bird species, of which about 450 birds occur regularly. All of these species can be sought on comfortable day trips within 100 km of the city centres of Pretoria and Johannesburg. Venturing a little further afield on weekend getaways, this already impressive total increases to 622 species. If you exclude vagrants and pelagic seabirds, this figure represents 88% of SA’s land birds! Birding is not limited to fragmented pockets of remaining natural veld: there are thousands of reserves, bird sanctuaries, game farms, birder-friendly properties and accommodation establishments that all welcome birders and offer exceptional birding
These are bigger and more detailed versions of the maps on the inside covers of the book. Note that Further Afield – Weekend Getaway sites are not plotted on the map. You can download an A2-sized high resolution pdf version.
