Although many birders have already figured out what I’ve been doing for the last two years, this is the first “official” announcement for CHAMBERLAIN’s WADERS: the definitive guide to southern Africa’s Shorebirds. I am very proud to share this video with you (especially if you choose to watch it in glorious fullscreen HD). The book will be available by Christmas this year. I still have a few species to paint and a lot of editing to do. Watch this space for updates.
Note: These are preliminary mock-up graphics only (cover design, book title and other details may change). Thank you to Jason Boyce, Dylan Vasapolli, Dewald Swanepoel and Matthew Axelrod for extra photos, and Kevin MacLeod for the music: “Cattails” from www.incompetech.com.
Can you identify the three species of waders on the right?

Looks phenomenal Faansie – cannot wait to get my hands on a copy
Thanks buddy!
Hi Faansie,
This is great and I’m looking forward to get my hands on this wonderful book!
this can surely be a very helpful field guide for any East African and Middle Eastern birder as well…
Cheers,
Itai
Thanks Itai…yes, the book certainly shares a lot of species with East Africa and the Middle East, and the Palearctic as well for that matter. Cheers!
Yes, this is fantastic news Faansie! I can’t wait for a copy – I love the knowledge and artistic skills you have shared in your other books such as LBJs
Thanks Richard – still some ways to go, but will get there eventually.
Looks awesome. Any way to get on a reminder mailing list for when it’s published please?
Well done!
Thanks Phil – I will send a reminder when its closer to publishing time. I’ll probably start taking pre-orders around September, but still a lot to do before then. Cheers!
This is really great news, already shared on FB-group I <3 Shorebirds so a few thousand potensial customers are waiting with their visa-card 🙂
Looks really great and thorough like the LBJ and Gauteng book!
X-mas will be a happy one this year!

Any chance of a late November early edition? Am back in SA for a week at the end of November and would love to pick up a couple for Christmas here in New York 🙂 Just to share the love of course – ho ho ho
Hahaha, yes Debbie. I’m working as fast as I can to get the book done – it might well be out in November, but I can’t make any promises. However, I will let you know as soon as I have a better idea of the timing. Ho ho ho. 🙂
Same here! Good work, Faansie, well done!
Would appreciate a reminder when you are ready to take orders.
Hi Andre – will do! Thanks for the comment.

Hi Schalk
Will do – I’m making good progress on the book. Will let you know as soon as it’s done.
I see now the LBJ’s is available as an eBook, will Waders be available as an eBook from the same date?
Hi Stuart – I will definitely release the book as an ebook as well, but probably only a few months after publication. F
Good Afternoon Faansie,
Any further update on pre-ordering?
Hi Jacques
I’m afraid I’m not quite there yet – still finishing some of the chapter introductions etc. Will let you know as soon as I have a better handle on production schedules. Cheers!

Hi Patrick – will do!
Good day Faansie – thank you for last night at the Honorary Rangers meeting – I really enjoyed what you have shared and your enthusiasm about birds. I wanted to buy some of your books but left my purse at home. Where can I find your books to buy? Or can I place an order directly on your email address?
Please do not stop what you are doing – I think it is fabulous.
Regards
Marle

If the Waders is anything like your Lbj book then it will be a “must get book”. Please keep me posted.
Your books are incredible. Have you thought about doing a guide for all species of southern Africa? You have a good majority of those species out of the way already in your other books, would be awesome to see a complete guide for everything.
Dear Kyle – thank you so much! I have certainly thought of doing a regional field guide, and more than likely I will, but that massive project is still a few years down the line. Waders represents only 80 species, but LBJs included around 200. So roughly a quarter of the region’s birds are already covered. Let’s see what the next few years bring… Thanks for the encouragement! At least I know there will be one buyer if I produced a Southern African Field Guide. F
We have just received a signed copy of ‘Waders’ courtesy of our good friends at Wader Quest South Africa, the Oertlis and the Sharlands. Our copy must be one of the first in the UK, certainly signed by your good self since it is not yet commercially available. It is a breathtakingly wonderful book congratulations, made all the more amazing as an achievement since you did it all yourself. It will be a constant source of inspiration to us and an essential reference work for us for many years to come.
Rick and Elis Simpson
Hi Rick and Elis
Thank you for your message – glad you got hold of a copy of the book. Yes, I’m sure it is one of the first in the UK! I will ship a few copies to NHBS early in 2017. Thank you so much for your kind words regarding the book, I appreciate you taking the time to write. I am also humbled and flattered by your glowing mini-review of the book on your waderquest.org site – which you may have noticed is mentioned as one of the selected “Online Resources” on p. 254 of the book. Above all, thank you for your passion for the conservation of this extraordinary group of birds!
